Wingchun

ABOUT WingChun
WingChun is a martial art known for a direct fighting style, fast hands, low kicks to the knees, and accessible movements. It was one of the martial arts created by resistance fighters against the foreign rulers of the last Chinese dynasty. Over the centuries, WingChun continued to be practiced and developed underground and emerged from obscurity in Southern China and Hong Kong about halfway through the 20th century when it became well-known. Today, there exist several variations each emphasizing different aspects of the art. Our curriculum focuses on the traditional fighting aspects along with several decades of refinements.
WingChun CHARACTERISTICS
The objectives of WingChun are economy-of-motion, directness, and practicality. WingChun can be very fast because of its emphasis on directness and efficiency. Speed, strength, and power are balanced with technique and stability. WingChun has a wide range of techniques which incorporate almost the entire body as a weapon and uses body mechanics and a natural range of motion instead of high-risk, acrobatic movements, so not a lot of athleticism and flexibility is required to learn.
WingChun TRAINING
WingChun isolates training into parts allowing students to build skill and learn the movements in a progressive, controlled manner. The forms and exercises are abstract, encouraging the use of concepts to adapt according to the situation beyond only the core applications of the movements. Attack-and-defense patterns are used like flash cards to develop coordination and reaction speed, and tactile training is used to learn how to respond to contact to the limbs.
Even though it is hard to train strikes to vital areas like the eyes, groin, throat, back of the head, etc. these are kept in mind when training the positions and movements, maintaining more habits that carry over for self-defense versus only training for sport.
WingChun is currently taught in small-group classes and private lessons. Since a limited amount of students can be accepted, only those who are willing, able, and coachable need apply. Contact us to apply for training if you are interested.
